about us

The mission of the Village Theatre Guild is to provide opportunities, in a social atmosphere, to cultivate talents and enrich personal perspective through high-quality theatre and educational development, while fostering a sense of pride and ownership in the community.

Who are we?

We are a non-profit community theatre, based in Glen Ellyn, Illinois since our founding in 1963, drawing volunteers from throughout the Chicago area.

We are your neighbors from all walks of life, who enjoy stepping out of our everyday worlds into an ever-changing fantasy of drama, comedy, suspense and entertainment. Our productions have received critical acclaim, and we work tirelessly for your applause.

What do we Do?

We put on four major productions a year, and sometimes a fifth summer “studio” show. Open auditions for actors are held for each show, and if cast, they join as members. Our members not only perform, but also produce, direct and stage-manage our shows.

Members are encouraged to try any aspect of stagecraft that interests them… running lights and sound… handling costumes and props… designing, building and decorating our sets….. doing publicity… even serving on committees to select our plays and maintain our building. There are significant roles for everyone.

Isn't there a lot to learn ?

That’s the fun of it! To enhance the learning opportunity, we benefit from the input of top acting, directing and technical professionals from the Chicago theatre community who conduct workshops and consult with our crews and casts. Our Visiting Artists program is unique among community theatres and is a major draw for serious theatre buffs.

Where do we perform ?

Our historic building was once a one-room schoolhouse built in 1917, located near the northwest corner of Park Boulevard and Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn (see directions at the bottom of our main page). Seating is limited, accommodating only about 60 audience members around a thrust stage. If you enjoy exceptional theatre in an intimate setting, you’ll fall in love with our distinctive home.

Can I be a member?

Sure, we’d love to have you. Come to any of our regular meetings at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. You’ll usually be treated to a one-act play or some scenes by fellow members eager to try something new. Annual dues are only $25 (or $40 for a household), and we’ll keep you abreast of everything going on with Catwalk, our monthly newsletter.
